Family and the land

The peaceful island of Devon Point in Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland, is about to change forever. In the summer of 1998, construction crews arrive to build tourist cottages in hopes of bringing an economic boost to the area.

The land had been owned by the Saunders family for several generations. The last family members to inherit it were two sisters, Clare Saunders Henderson and Beatrice Saunders Holwell. In the 1960s, the two women moved away and sold the land to a wealthy St. John’s businessman, Charles Sinclair. He allowed the land to remain idle until Winterberry Development in Halifax purchased it in 1990 and planned the project.

No one could anticipate that the sisters’ sons, Gordon Henderson and Eamon Holwell, would challenge the development and claim the land as their own. What were their motives and why now?

As the summer passes, the question of land ownership threatens to tear apart the Henderson grandchildren, destroy lifelong friendships, and disrupt a family wedding in St. John’s. The fate of the cherished island of Devon Point remains in limbo, while the daughters of patriarch, Charles Sinclair, uncover secrets about their father that they could never have imagined.
